The Kaleidoscope Project is a theatre group established in 2009 with an alternative approach to theatre, literature and art based in Co. Kildare.We experiment with poetry on stage, multimedia and physical theatre.

First Ladies (Die Prasidentinnen)

Irish premiere of a European cutting-edge play by one of the most controversial European playwrights –
Werner Schwab!!! Werner Schwab’s First Ladies is a barking mad critique of modern family and religious life. Three worn women sit round a kitchen table talking sausages, sex and excrement in a drunken evening that takes an unexpected turn.

Erna is a former cleaner with an unruly son and some strict moral values; Greta’s husband has run off with another woman and she now takes comfort in her blonde curls and thick make-up; and Marie prides herself on her dexterity in the art of toilet cleaning. As the three women vie for eternal salvation, they begin to imagine alternative futures. Greta’s fate is to be fondled by the musician who later asks her hand in marriage, the butcher entrusts his stock of meat to Erna’s cautious hands, and the priest rewards Marie’s dexterity with some wacky water-closet surprises.

Inspired by a series of poems by Ted Hughes entitled ‘The Epilogue Poems‘ this project conveys free structure of poetry generating a dreamy and sensual atmosphere.  The idea is to combine visual arts and video installation with a theatrical performance based on poetry and not on a dramatic text/play. The production plays with both textual and visual qualities of theatre and explores elements of Greek theatre and of physical and dance theatre.
The main theme of the production is the male – female dichotomy of the universe and the never-ending quest for balance and harmony. The inspiration is in mythologies and poetry, and the rendering is impressionistic, oniric and poetic. The project aims to be a poetic extravaganza rather than a traditional play, in which lyricism is laced with suggestive stage images and where missives from the edge of extreme experience are laced with a wry humour.
